DOG BARN TRAINING

Helping You And Your Dog Live Your Best Lives!

“When we stop to listen, we can hear our dog speaking”

-Jan Gould

You got your dog and life is great…isn’t it?

Sometimes our expectations don’t meet up with reality. Your dream dog is barking and lunging at other dogs or the neighbors, running away instead of coming when you call, or jump on everyone you meet. It’s embarrassing and certainly not what you had in mind when you got your dog. What do you do now?

Whether your dog needs help with basic manners to live as a great companion or you experiencing more challenging issues such as pulling, lunging, growling or barking at dogs or people, resource guarding, or chasing the family cat, we are here to help you.

Together we will develop an individualized, step by step training plan using positive reinforcement techniques.

With positive training focused on your individual dog’s needs, we can produce positive changes.

Jan teaching agility in the 100+ year old barn on the artificial turf

Jan is consumed by training and behavior.

Whether it’s a new science research paper, a conference on aggression, a webinar on working with high drive dogs, puppy socialization or producing her own 15 episode podcast on emotions in dogs and how they drive your dog’s behavior, she is likely to be learning from it…

“Today we ventured up the street where the woman feeds the squirrels. We managed to arrive just after she had put out nuts for them. Squirrels everywhere! We'd been practicing your lesson with birds and other dogs which are distracting but not too distracting so we both knew what to do and I was amazed at how successful Gracie was. She was very interested but quickly started returning her attention to me, and working with me and we were able to work our way past using the 1,2,3 game and lots of hot dogs!”

-Many thanks, Pat

Emotions and how they drive behavior

Jan recently sat down with 15 experts in the dog training world to interview them on the subject of how the emotions of both dogs and humans are at play in the bond between them. These 15 in-depth conversations were released as individual podcasts and are available to listen to at no charge! Sign up today, to listen and learn more about the emotional well-being of our best friends. It’s more than just our lives….its Our Lives with Dogs!

Education

Jan is a strong believer in continuing education.  There is no regulatory body certifying that the dog trainer you hire has had any education in animal behavior, any person can hang up a sign and start training animals. Some of these trainers will be good, others not so much.  Some may even be harmful to your pet. An educated trainer who is looking to improve their knowledge should be a benefit to all they help.

Through attending seminars, conferences and on line courses and classes, Jan strives to increase her knowledge of the science behind animal learning.  She also believes in maintaining an extensive library of works related to the learning and positive training of animals…
